In my 1999, the stock cones were poly but the surrounds were foam and gave way after I attacked it with 30Hz and 40Hz test tones just to see.
I have some rather cheap midbass woofers meant for this application that I will try. I will post the results when I do. You can still by them today and they're rather affordable. Chances are they won't match up to even the mid-fi performance of an Infinity or Boston Acoustics, etc. We'll see.
I used to install car stereos back when it first started getting big in the 80's before I went to college. Hopefully I haven't forgotten. :)
