1995 900S 2.3l Convertible
A brief background: After an oil and filter change, I had a low oil pressure flicker. Always used Mobil 1, etc. Never made any sounds. No ticking, whining, rattling, etc. I can hear lifters/tappets when I get on the gas.
I took it in thinking it was probably the oil pickup screen. Shop called and said bearing and what appears to be balance chain/guide were found in the oil pan. (However, I specifically took a styrofoam cup on my last oil change and dipped it while the oil was draining. I always pour some out to look for metal flakes...totally clean.) They said they pulled the bearing caps and the bearings are worn. Does this sound right...especially given that I dont hear anything before or after the oil light started flickering?
I was quoted 4K for a block (new from Saab) and about 3K for labor. This morning I found a block on goldwing for $875. I also found another shop that will do it for about 2500. But the other shop wonders if block replacement is even necessary. He seems to think that the balance chain wore a hole in the oil pump and thats where Im loosing pressure and that maybe replacing timing chain, balance chain, sprockets, etc. will fix the problem.
I guess Im looking for some advice from you guys that have been down this road. My Saab is in mint condition except for this, heh. I really planned on keeping this car for a long time (actually was looking at cars when this happened so I could park it and just drive it for recreation.) If I have this work done, am I looking at something else major go wrong in another year? And should I have just the chains replaced or while Im at it pull the motor and have the rods and main replaced, gaskets, etc. They said that would be about 4K.
Im at that fork in the road and I just want to hear from some of the people that have been down this path and the experienced techs on the board. Invest or cut my losses?
