It's a lot easier to swap heads than engines so IMHO, it's worth pulling yours and seeing what you've got. Piston damage is possible though I'd bet it happens when the split valve guides fall in rather than from the valves themselves, given that the fly-cuts on the crowns indicate that the valves strike fairly well in on the crown. I fixed mine with many new guides and 18/24 new valves (all 12 exhaust valves, naturally)for about $1400 but I know that prices have gone up a bit since then. Then again, the prices have fallen on some of the timing belt bits and my total included a new water pump, timing belt/pullies and thermostat, all things that would be smart to replace on any unknown replacement engine you might buy. Best scenario would be to rule out piston damage and find some good used heads.
Finally, please let us know how many miles past the timing belt replacement interval you were when it failed.
