The belt pulleys are not too hard to check. The airbox is fastened in with three bolts...just loosen them, and it slides up and out. You can leave the pipe from the airbox attached. Using a long 1/2" drive extension or a 1/2" drive breaker bar, find the 1/2" square socket behind the belt area on the engine. This rotates forward to take tension off the belt. There's a little hole in the side of that rotating piece, behind and below the socket, where you can stick a thin allen key in to hold the tension off the belt.
With the tension off, try spinning the pulleys by hand. They should move smoothly with no wobble. The back and center idler pulleys are common culprits, so pay particular attention to these. You should replace them anytime you replace the belt, even if they don't show signs of wear.
Another trick to try to pinpoint the noise is to use a mechanic's stethoscope, which you should be able to get at Autozone or the equivalent. Or you can just listen through a length of garden hose, pointing the hose to different locations to listen for the noise. Be careful with this if you're sticking something attached to your ears into the engine with the belts spinning.
