I finally completed trying out Seth/German's method (now called Seth's method #1).
My first attempt was an enhancement of Seth's method #2 that I proposed on this thread in October. Basically, it's to use the Telephone adaptor(which only gets you mono signal) and then to solder the extra channel to the radio as per Seth's method #1. This was a failure for two reasons:
1. It wasn't any less work. Because I had to bring a ground signal along with the left channel all the way from the radio, it would have been no less work to do three solders and route three wires than two.
2. It didn't sound good. The left (soldered) channel was fine. The right (Telephone adaptor) channel was weak and exhibited considerable alternator whine. I know, this could be a sign of poor grounding but this signal was coming straight from the telephone harness so if there was poor grounding it was inherent in the use of the harness. Perhaps using only the telephone harness is fine, but trying to drive the stereo simultaneously by two methods does not work.
So I reverted to the full soldering method. Actually, I still have the Enable switch hooked up on the Telephone adaptor as opposed to soldered to the stereo. I like this approach more.
Using the telephone adaptor means (for 2002 9-3, North American version) disconnecting the OnStar. Personally, that's fine with me as I don't use it. I'm wondering if the reason that German had problems with this method without further circuitry was that he was driving against the OnStar signal. I haven't tried re-connecting the OnStar to see if it'll work that way too; although I'd like to for the sake of furthering understanding, I've got enough projects on the go that I know I will not get to it.
It sounds fantastic. (Even from the headphone out of my iPod, not even using a real line out.)
Happy Listening,
Steve
