Nearly three months ago I purchased a '97 900 S from an independent dealer. She has almost 200,000 miles on her, but with $12,000 of service records in the glove compartment I felt like the car had been well maintained.
Since then I've had the car in the shop three times. Exhaust leak (needed new clip), drive belt replacement, front brake pads, replacement of rear passenger door handle...
Now it's in the shop again, this time because after driving it in hot weather, suddenly the car refused to start. The positive side of the battery was burning hot to touch. After letting it cool off, I tried to start it again, and I got rapid clicking when I turned the key and no starting, though all the console stuff came on. There were some issues with the electric locks, too, but that improved the longer the car sat.
I had it towed to the place I bought it from, where the mechanic informed me he'd replaced the battery. I've had battery failures before (in another car) and I had no check engine light come on with this.
From reading other posts and talking to people, I don't think it's the battery. Possibly DI cassette, possibly starter, CPS, probably not fuel pump.
Also three of the plastic panels on the underside of the car are hanging down and the mech told me he can't do much to fix it--either strap them up or remove them completely.
Am I in over my head here? I love this car so much but having things go wrong every couple of weeks is becoming a serious issue.
I would appreciate any feedback on this.
