Broken rear hatch latch

Yesterday the rear hatch lock on my 2000 9-3 5-door was working fine
with the remote or the unlock button on the door. But today when I
tried to unlock it, I hear a whirring noise like a stripped gear
spinning and the hatch lock does not release. Could this be some
type of cable that has come loose from the latch mechanism and is
this a DIY fix?
