hi Pamela,
some saabs require premium to prevent damage and to get the best performance. Most can do either. On turbocharged saab engine/cars you should (will) notice a performance increase with higher octane gasoline. In fact I believe the rated HP and Torque figures given may have been measured with premium but I'm not completely positive.
All that said, if your owner's manual says you can use regular (87) then you can, and without harm, on a car that is stock as delivered. I do it on my daily drivers all of the time. If I want to get a charge on the weekend, especially driving the mountains or on a run to Las Vegas, I'll spring for the higher octane. It does make a difference as the APC system will boost it's way till sensing a knock condition and then ease up a bit.
There are folks on the site with modified or "enhanced" engines, almost all have to run premium. The 9000 Aero 5 Speed requires it, however the same car with automatic does not (that engine is somewhat detuned to protect the automatic - according to saab). But some have successfully done the "stage" performance enhancements with the automatic, taking it above the figures for the Aero 5speed, and have good experiences but they run premium.
In short, you can use the 87, but if/when you use the premium you should be able to blow that BMW off. how does that stupid hummer commercial say it, "get your girl on"?
