Cat Connections?

So I'm thinking my Cat needs replacing but I want to be sure before I drop the cash. How easy is it to pull off your cat and shine a flash light in it? Is it welded to the downpipe or can you remove a clamp or two and simply slide JUST the cat off?
This would be my first real adventure in exhaust tinkering beyond the manifold.

Thanks for the input!
