Check the brake lines... It sound unusual to me, but possible. If the lines were somehow weakened, they can dilate (baloon out) when you press on the brake pedal. I had a brake hose like that on my old '89 900. But it was also leaking slightly. I feel I was pretty lucky to catch it before it burst...
Have someone press the pedal while you watch each brake line. The front ones are right there by the calipers. IIRC, the rear lines are steel at the caliper, with the rubber section further inboard between the axle beam & the floor pan.
