'97 900 SET Overheating problem

I have 1997 900 SET/115,000 miles. On the drive home from work yesterday in the 100 degree Chicago heat my car overheated about a mile from my house. The warning light came on and the temp needle was spiked to the top. Since I was close to home I kept driving (a little under 10 minutes). When I got home I popped the hood and the coolant reservior was bone dry. I check the coolant frequently, and I've never had any problems with coolant loss in the past. Also, leading up to the overheating warning the low coolant warning never came on.
I let the car sit overnight and topped off the coolant this morning. I started to drive around the block and after about 30 seconds the low coolant warning came on. I parked the car, checked the coolant level, and it was fine.
My questions are: what could be the cause of the overheating? I think my thermostat is probably due for a replacement (I've experienced the temp gauge drop slightly when driving on the highway in cold weather), but could this be caused by something else? Also, should I be worried that I might have damaged the head gasket by continuing to drive the mile to get home while the car was overheating?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
