It was very common on the first generation IDMs on the 90-92 9000 to fail in the manner you describe.
Actually, that was the only way they seemed to fail in that they were misfiring under load due to that one or more of the ignition coils had cracked and the oil escaped.
Back then, Saab had a bulletin out saying NOT to replace the whole IDM but only replace the coils being bad since each coil was loose.
That changed with the new and improved Trionic IDM that was released in 1993 and the coils glued down with epoxi.
