My '95 900S (w/ 118k miles) has always jerked a bit when the compressor clutch engages. Over the past few years, it has gotten worse. Plus, I've been chasing a hunting idle problem for the last couple of months.
Most everyone (including Dean- thanks), said "check your vac lines". Sure enough, the line to my fuel pressure regulator was so brittle, it crumbled when I removed it. I just found a leak in the hose to the purge valve (on the throttle body side). Taped it temporarily.
Driving to work, the car didn't flinch at all when idling. Better yet, I ran the A/C and could barely feel the clutch engage (I think it's better than when I bought the car).
Bottom line- if you have a good amount of mile, replace all your vacuum lines. Probably $20 in parts and a very easy hour.
Good luck.
