I do run synthetic in my '94 900S 2.3.
I switched it at 162k miles; the original owner (who still had the car until 162k) used semi-synthetic in it. I use Mobil1 Full Synthetic, 0W40 and a very good quality filter (Mobil1 filter, actually). I haven't had any problems with oil leaks or sludge or anything. The engine really likes the 0W oil and my mileage is up a couple MPG's.
The car now has 170k on the clock; I commute 120 miles each day in it and have been changing the oil, still at 3k miles. I will extend that after a few more changes.
If I do develop oil leaks, I will simply replace the gaskets/seals that are leaking. At this mileage, seals and gaskets are going to leak. Synthetic oil provides much better startup and shear protection than regular oil and it doesn't break down into a gooey brown mess. I don't know why you would run regular oil.
