Because of the high torque I would not fool around w/ the 1 1/4, I got my 32 at sears and used a breaker bar. the manual says the nut is "self locking type" but does not look like one (e.g., with the plastic insert).
I did the ball joint a few months ago (there's a good website that I'll link below, not V6 but otherwise the projects are applicable), there is a black "boot" that was clearly torn and the inside goober material was leaking on mine. It's not a project you want to attack if you don't need to, it involves removing stanchion and control arms, not in themselves difficult but there's a lot of plain old muscling things around to get them to fit. And if the high torque bolts are rusted or break off...call a tow truck unless you have the tools. You should plan on replacing the stanchion/control bolts as they will be corroded (I didn't but I didn't plan too far ahead either)
Search for my tip on getting the ball joint nut removed also, that's a tricky spot too. I think it involved sawing off the top part of the bolt with a hacksaw BEFORE loosening the nut, then you can get the nut off and fit the ball joint puller in there and pop it out.
Look at the CV boot while you're down there, make sure its not leaking dark grey grease either from a tear or clamp loosening. Otherwise I wouldn't fiddle with it if you don't need to.
I don't have the manual re: R&R alternator so no help there.
Good luck
Mike
