Oil sludge - Possible to flush out?

After explaining to my friend (what I know) about oil sludge buildup, she simply asked, "Why can't you just flush it out?" Even after reading many posts and articles about sludge, I haven't seen anything about cleaning it out of the engine. Is this possible? Could the life of a doomed engine be extended by flushing the system? If not, why not? I have some theories, but I'm curious as to what other people think.
Thanks,
