Problem with 96 Saab 900 gas tank

Hi folks-
I have a 96 Saab 900 which started leaking fuel a few weeks ago. It only leaked when the tank was full. Took it to the mechanic who replaced the ring around the fuel pump (as I understand it, the ring holds the pump in place), which apparently was cracked. For a while after the repair it seemed okay, but recently I topped the tank off and once again the car leaked fuel, so I took it back to the mechanic for a repair (the repair was still under warranty). He did something---not sure what, but he claimed that he "tightened something"---no part replacement, which makes me a little suspicious. Once again, it does not leak, but then again, it never leaked unless the tank was full, i.e., topped off, and I have not topped it off since.
Here the question: he tells me that I should now never top it off, as when the plastic tank gets warm in the summer, it expands, and the stress will crack the plastic ring. This stikes me as bogus: that I can never top my fuel tank off. Seems to me that he could have done nothing in the second repair, and if I never top it off, I would never know. Have any other Saab owners out there had the same problem?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
