Thanks for your responses. Even though I'm now convinced that the fluid is harmless I'll try the paper towel trick anyway just for neatness. And good to know oil is non-conductive.
I went back to inde mechanic who says it's power steering fluid, and that he had noticed it. Makes sense, since several months ago there was a PS fluid leak attended to by saab dealer as a warranty item - so something still leaking or more likely left over from refilling reservoir at that time. So I'll have to keep an eye on the PS level.
