That said, I have a 1998 900SET 2.0l turbo with automatic transmission. I have had only minor problems with the vehicle, most of which were sorted out under warranty. The two most dramatic problems have been a DI cassette failure and a bad transmission range selector switch. The 9-3 had an improved range selector switch from the factory, though the DI cassette issue still exists.

As far as mileage, I get 18 MPG around town on short (10 mile) trips and 32 MPG on long freeway trips (like to Portland). For a typical mix of Seattle around town and some freeway driving, I get mid-20's MPG.

My Saab choices in order of preference would be a really clean 9000 (Aero of course, even though I find the headroom in the later 9000s a bit low), then a nice 9-3 5-door (all USA 9-3 have the 2.0l turbo engine), and last would be a 9-5 wagon with the 2.3l turbo (a bit too large and stodgy for my taste).

Hope you find the car that fits your needs (emotional as well as rational).
