Napa manaul adjust clutch cable too tight.

After carrying around my NAPA manual adjust cable in the trunkt for a year I decided to install it, after encountering some adjuster oddities with the stock Saab cable.
All went well untl the end, when I had a heck of a time getting the cable end over the clutch lever. Finally got it in, too find that the cable has absolutely no free play and (predictably) the clutch slips like crazy.
Anyone else run into this? Any thoughts? I've double checked that all the rubber blocks, etc, are properly set and that the adjuster barrel is in as far as it will go.
I figure I'll leave it a while and pump the clutch a few times everytime I go by, to see if the cable may stretch and settle enough to be usable, but I doubt it will - it feels more than just a little tight.
Old cable (which I was replacing partly because it is a used 110K car with no service recoreds so I have no idea the clutch/cable history, actually looked pretty good once I got it out. Hate to put it back in, but hate to put in another stock cable either.
