I can't see any connection between the two problems.

Maybe the brake light switch, ignition switch ot shift solenoid start to get flaky?
I think you will hear a faint click from shifter area when pushing the brake pedal. That is the release solenoid doing its work to release the shift lock out.

If you pump the brake pedal up and down and listen for the click, you might notice that it fails to make the noise and subsequently releasing the shifter sometimes.
