Cut the sheet metal under the rear seat at your own risk. Not a big risk, but you may experience gas fumes coming back in the car if all doesn't turn out quite right (even if it seems OK at first). It is somewhat hard to get the pump retaining lock ring tight without the official tool (search archives for tips). Definitely replace the O-ring. Also, any minute bends, etc. to the fuel pump hoses could leak vapors slightly. Not a big enough deal to be a flamability hazard, but let me tell you, it doesn't take much for the fuel smell to permeate the car.
If you want to cut the sheet metal, search past posts for the link. I think I have linked it in one of mine on this topic.
I don't think it is all that hard to drop the tank. I recommend biting the bullet and just doing that. R&Ring the assembly is a great idea vs. the whole pump assembly. If you can put the car out of commission for a few days, remove the pump and the Walbro insert just to make sure all is well before you buy parts. On my car, I had an impact from below that shatted the plastic housing so a new pump assembly was mandatory.
