I'm gonna suggest you do a full search of archives -- which it sounds like maybe you've already begun if you know about the cooliemail.com link (bummer if NA now). There are LOTS of posts about fuel pump R&R. No pics.
I recommend dropping the tank but plenty of others have cut the sheet metal. There was just a post about this yesterday with several replies. I offered several tips on the job from January 2006 if you click on my name to see past posts.
If you drop the tank, DEFINITELY try to get it empty first by driving. Siphoning the gas out is a bear. Apparently some tanks have anti-siphon devices. Mine did! I used about 4 different tubes and siphons and only got a few drops out. I did eventually sipon it out from below after I disconnected the fuel filler tube, but even with 1/2 tank, some gas spilled on me. I reeked for days!
If you have specific questions after reviewing those old posts, definitely post back and we'll do what we can to help.
