On the side of the key, next to the "lock" button, you will find a little hole. You would think that inserting a paper clip in that hole would release the back. However, in my experience, the little tab that the paper clip must depress is much too stiff to open the remote that way.
Instead, you can insert a small screwdriver between the side and back of the key, next to the hole, and pry in the same direction that the paper clip would be pushing. It actually comes out pretty easily, and once you see what's in there, you'll know exactly what to do next time.
Disclaimer: If you pry too hard and break the tab on the key back, I've heard that the dealer will charge about $18 for a new back.
The battery I use is a Panasonic brand CR1632. Outside the dealer, I couldn't find it locally, so I bought 5 for $6 (shipped) from eBay. (Some folks have reported that Target carries them.)
Regards,
Dave
