Rear headrest "socket"

While removing the rear seat headrests from my 2000 9-3 last weekend (to haul home a piece of furniture), one of the plastic sleeve "sockets" cracked. The top piece with the ring, release button, and half the sleeve shaft came out with the headrest rod, while the rest of the sleeve shaft I retrieved from the hole.
It doesn't look worth trying to glue the two pieces back together, but I thought about just moving one of the other "sockets" from the middle rear seat position (since I don't have a middle headrest) to replace the broken one. Then I could just take the top part of the broken one and use it to plug the hole for the one I move. The only trick is, does anyone know how to successfully remove the one from the middle without breaking it?
I tried looking at it from the underside with the seat folded down. I can see the sleeve sticking out, but it is not obvious how to release whatever spring "ears" are holding it in place. From looking at the broken one, it looks like there are expanding pieces along the sleeve that lock it in place. Anyone ever removed one of these before?
