No code needed for my 2001 base 5-door. That ID & handshaking is stored in the radio & in the car's security system.
The buttons on the SID (at least) are easy to clean when you remove the faceplate. Most likely the gunk is where the plastic buttons come thru the holes in the baseplate. I expect the faceplate of the radio is the same way.
