My 2001 9-3 Saab SE with automatic transmission occasionally does not start. As far as I remember, it has always happened when I had previously driven, i.e., the engine was warm. When I turn the ignition key, the lights and fan come on and so does the fuel pump (noise from under the back seat). There is gas in the tank. But the starter will not crank - not even the smallest noise - total silence. SID does not display any codes. The problem has occurred 4-5 times so far, and (typically) after few tries and within minutes I am on my way. On one occasion, though, I got stuck for almost an hour. My Saab mechanic, whom I called, advised moving the shifter to the neutral position - I tried all kinds of tricks but that did not help. When I was ready to call the tow truck, I decided to try one last time (after about an hour) and the car started as if nothing had happened. I drove straight to my mechanic and - as I expected - the problem did not reoccur. Few days later I left the car there for a check, they found nothing (btw: this is a Saab only shop).
I read up the posts on this BB on the Neutral Safety Switch issue (btw: is Transmission Range Switch another name for the same part?) and it seems to be a possibility. I wonder, however, if the fact that the problem has always occurred after I had driven the car first (never on a cold engine) is a pure coincidence? Or is warm engine a factor? How could it affect operation of the switch?
If it is the Neutral Safety Switch issue, is it hard to replace? (I.e., is it a DIY job?)
Thanks, -AlexS
