The biggest enemy of your calipers is rust, but the rust to worry about is on the inside of the caliper. The DOT 4 brake fluid that our cars use attracts moisture, even in a closed braking system and that is what rusts the caliper cylinder walls and the pistons within the caliper cylinder. The fluid should be flushed out every other year. I don't like the pedal-pumping method because it can lead to wear and/or scratching of the internal cups on the master cylinder if you go too far down with the pedal and take the master cylinder piston into realms where it's never been before (there's dirt and grit in that area). There are a number of power and/or pressure bleeders that will make this a one hour job, including jacking, wheel removal, etc. I use the Motive Power Bleeder on three Saabs and a Porsche....works like a charm.
