Radio Button Lights all out - Mark G in CO?

I have seen posts by three people on this in the archives, and now it has hit my 2001 9-3 Base as it turned 99K a few days ago.
All the lights on the single CD player radio unit are out. However, if one presses on parts of the face of the radio, or hard on th buttons to the same effect of bending the face in a bit, the light on all buttons come on momentarily. They go off again when the pressure is release, although there have been one or two instances where they stayed on for a while after release, then back to the same behavior.
Mark G. in Colorado, if you are out there, can you help? Where did you solder a connector foot?
My radio is one that has refused to come out when the SID pixels died and the common advice on this list at the time was to remove the radio to get the SID out. I did discover in not getting the radio out more than 2" - 3"that the SID can be easily removed without removing the radio at all. I am hoping that by reversing the prior advice and removing the SID again that I can somehow get the radio out.
Thanks to anyone with suggestions. DER
