You should definitely replace the boot and regrease the joint ASAP. Once you hear noises, the CV joint is shot and needs to be replaced, but luckily you noticed it before the joint has lost too much grease. For some cars you can buy split boots that let you put repair the problem with everything left in place. We've had one on a car for well over 100,000 miles. Another option is a rebuilt driveshaft that will have new boots on it, or a good one from a junkyard. The most difficult, but possibly the cheapest, option is to take the driveshaft out and replace the boot with a factory part. Sometimes this involves a lot of work and a special tool to crimp the bands on the boot, though.
