You're going to read 3.4% fewer miles with the 205/55/16 vs the 205/50/16 so your side is going to show that much less gas mileage. This assumes equal tread depth of course. It's only equal to about .95 mpg however.
Note that the T7 management engines get better mileage than the T5. My 1999 is a T5 and my 2002 is a T7. I have no idea what the 1994 is but it's probably no better than the 1999 gas mileage-wise.

I get about 29.5mpg on the highway in my 1999 9-3 right now.
