It probably save some gas, but turning it off also increases the amount of moisture in the air (so glass fog up, and probably get icy the next time you get in the car after work....)
I leave my A/C on (never in econ mode) and the dryness results in this:
I NEVER have to clean the inside of my windows (except for the finger smudges from my friends taunting me when they ride in my ultra-clean car! ;-) (I live in MI/ON, and my car only fog up with 4-5 people inside during very cold winter days.)
Also, the interior of my car ALWAYS smell like its new, even after 4 years, in the summer. (No humidity = no odor to fester) The only exception was the time I left my car at the airport for 3 weeks in the July sun.
