This sounds almost exactly like what happened to me Saurday night, and I was going to post similar questions this afternoon. Mine crapped out on the Belt Parkway and I kept going until the next exit which, coincidentally, led me into a Mobil shop that was also the AAA Service Center from which AAA was going to dispatch a tow truck. Given the towing rates, even with AAA, I took the tow to a mechanic close to my house rather than my SAAB indie who is a lot farther from where I was at the time. The mechanic just left me a message about pulleys and belts without a lot of detail except for the $262 bill. That sounded high to me for belts and pulleys, but some of the responses below suggest that with labor and taxes included it isn't too far off. SO thanks all for the pre-emptive responses!
