first of all, in my opinion, the three inch downpipe made very little difference in the sound. For that, you need a free flowing muffler like the Magnaflow Kent suggested.
Secondly, if you go to a local exhaust shop for a three inch system, make sure they have a mandrel bender. Otherwise, the crimps will cause too much back pressure. These cars have some tight clearances and require some sharp bends. I don't know whether you could find somebody to do it right for $300 from the cat back. I went to one of the better shops in the Houston area, and after putting it up in the air and looking at it, they didn't want to tackle the job of building a custom system for me.
Finally, I agree that the Genuine Saab 3 inch downpipe is a work of art. But I believe the stainless cat back exhausts they offer are 2.5 inch. The way I read their web site, the only 3 inch exhaust they offer is the JT, which is aluminized, not stainless.
