When you press the 'lock' button, do you hear the lock motor make a klunk sound in the hatch? On my 2001 that happens a bit later than the doors, so it's easy to hear it separately from the doors. If so, then look for a loose or busted mechanical linkage inside the hatch (from lock motor to lock mechanism itself).

Otherwise, look for problems with the wiring harness in the hatch. Check near the hinges where the wiring plugs into the car's harness. Check at the lock motor.
