Sorry to hear about your bad luck. It seems fishy to me too that it would just decide to fry at that point... Yes, there is a small time delay for oil getting to the top end and all the crevices when you drain the oil, and it's possible that this caused the engine to fry, but I wouldn't bet on it.. Was the motor exhibiting any adverse signs (knock, clunk, low power) before you stopped for the oil change? How many miles on the motor? I never heard of Mobil 1 frying an engine, not matter how long you ran a non-synthetic prior to.
