The NG900/OG9-3 and 9-5 alternators doesn't fail in the same way as the C900/9000 where you got away with only replacing the voltage regulator/brush kit.
That on top of that you still have to remove the alternator (belt, tensioner and alt bolts) on these models to even get the black cover off to get to the voltage regulator make the job even riskier since you need to put everything back together just to find out that you still need a complete alternator.
These new alternators are so powerful in amperage that they kill themself if something goes wrong like a shorted battery.
That is also the reason why car manufacturers today state that when a car battery is dead, DON'T JUMPSTART the car but let the donor car charge up the battery in your car and then start it.
If you jumpstart the car without charging the battery, when disconnecting the cables, your alternator could fry from the tremendous amount of load that the near empty battery is putting on the alternator.
It is also a card with all rebuilt alternators warning about to make sure the battery is fully charged before starting the car after replacing the alternator.
This was not a big issue on the C900/9000 models since those alternators are pretty weak in comparison.
