I found a good local installer that convinced me to replace my blown GMC and Saab door mid-subs with 6.75 oversized Memphis two ways. I have never heard of the Memphis brand. The speakers sounded just as good as some Polks I had heard, and were about 125 installed. I had him replace the Saab dash 3.5s as well for another 90.
I was surprised to see that the GMC and Saab mids were almost the same product, and I have the upgraded system in the 900SE. The GMC is a 2000 and the Saab is a 1998, so maybe its a GM parts bin thing.
The result in the GMC is great, more bass, but a little too bright for me, so I turn down the highs a little. I now have two tweeters running, so maybe that is why. Radio, Sirius, and manufactured CDs are perfect, I had a burned CD that I didn't like, because the highs hurt my ears.
The result in the Saab is nice too, but the dash speakers steal the show, amazing upgrade. I bet I could disconnect the door speakers and be happy. The door speakers are good for some rumble under your feet/seat, but don't offer much in the way of sound. They seem a little muddy, but anything is better than cracked foam surrounds on the stock speakers! I am not sure why I like the speakers so much in the GMC and less so in the Saab. The GMC door speakers are two way components to stock head, and the Saab door speakers are run from the amp under the passenger seat. I would have thought that the sound would be similar. I am glad I have the new dash speakers, because I am totally happy with the sound now, AND done cheaply.
