There are two idler pulley and one is grooved and the other isn't. The one that is smooth is, because the back side of the belt rides on it. Check "ALL" the pulleys and make sure they all freewheel before you put the new belt on. Water pump/ Alternator/ Power steering/ A/C pulley. "Harmonic balancer" pulley can only be checked for side to side tightness. On the tension pulley , just pry back with a 1/2" breaker bar and insert a 6mm drill bit into the hole on the side of it. Release the pulley when belt is in place. You can clean the metal pulley with a carefully applied amount of heat from a torch and wire brush. Or take a rag with acetone and wrap around the pulley for several minutes and brush. GOOD LUCK!!!
