Actually it sounds more like a clutch adjustment/wear issue. What year/how many miles? If the clutch isn't disengaging fully then it'll be very difficult to shift, epsecially into reverse, and clutch engagement will occur with the pedal very close to the floor. There isn't a direct way to inspect clutch wear, but there is an indirect way. One can measure the amount the piston on either the clutch slave or master cylinder (I forget which) protrudes and infer clutch wear from that.
