Getting the seal out of the distributor??

I've had the GM seal Swedecar suggested sitting on my shelf, so today I blythly set off to reseal my distributor.
I removed the spring, then hammered out the pin, and removed the drive gear and then the shaft.
I'd always assumed the seal was on the bottom, where it would be easy to get to, but no, it seems to be at the top. Worse, It appears to be under a shiny metal washer-like plate, which looks like isuspeciously like the thurst surface for the thrust washer on the shaft shaft. It would seem this must be removed to get at the seal, but it also appears to be quite firmly crimped in place, to the point where I am hesitant to apply too much force in trying to remove it.
Also, it is questionable just how this force would be applied, as there is the seal and a bushing below it that means it is not possible to get some sort of a drift of driver to bear on it. Also it means that if I try and remove the plate and fail, the seal will be too damaged to use.
I could reinvent the wheel here, making up special tools and otherwise turning what was supposed to be a little job into a great big one, but hopefully someone here can explain what the trick is, if there is a trick.
