There seem to be two formulations of oil (apart from different types) -- one of which is oil alone, and one where the oil is mixed with a small amount of refrigerant. Mine was the latter. In either case you are supposed to invert the can while you are allowing the system to drain the contents. I preweighed my full can of PAG-46 and then weighed the empty one, and found that exactly two ounces had indeed been added. Ironically the extra amount of refrigerant was probably just enough, with the other full can of refrigerant, to slightly overfill my system, but bleeding off the excess was very easy.
I had no way of knowing whether my system was low in oil, but my assumption was that an additional 2 ounces of oil/refrigerant mixture was not going to result in too much oil, but would assist if the residual oil was very low.
