Jayne-
I've just done the same with the help of this BB. It seems to be a common error that the can of refrigerant isn't pierced when the nozzle on is screwed on. The bottle should get cold if its dispensing.
The "combo" I got from the BB is as follows:
The car should be on for a few minutes, turn the ACC to low and fan high (or max cool on manual controls) with doors open or windows down. (After attaching the nozzle to the refrigerant) put the nozzle on the connection point near the battery. Check the pressure first. Posts on the BB seem to agree that pressure should be about 32-34psi. If its more professional service is needed and if its lower you should be safe to dispense the refrigerant, shaking the can and stopping to check the pressure periodically. My compressor did not turn on immediately. I charged in the morning and tested the car 8 hours later and it now kicks in. Unfortunately, still warm!
Hope this helps!
