It is no secret that on the 2000 and older 9-3/9-5 keys, the micro chip that makes the car start is embedded inside the key head, not the remote.
Still, if you only have one key, you should get another key as a back up.
Just adding another of those remotes will not help you if you loose your only key.
On the 9-3 model, you can lock the car with the remote and open with the key, no problem.
Your shop might have had the NG900 in mind when they said that if you lock the car with the remote, you cannot open the door with the key. That was a stupid feature on the NG900 only.
I would first of all try to install new batteries in the remotes and try again.
