Fuel Pump Replacement

I need to replace my fuel pump on my 97 900SE. I lifted up the rear seat and didn't hear or feel anything engage when I turned the key to the "almost on" position. I hit the area where the access panel was and the car almost started up. It is cranking strong. The tank is half full. If I were to replace the pump cartridge from the top, exactly where would I have to start cutting and what is the best way to replace the sheet metal? Thanks
