Suspension upgrade question (Koni w or w/o springs)

For years I've heard people rave about Koni shocks. My 99 9-3 se seems to be needing some new shocks at 120k miles. So I figure I'd upgrade. How much lower does the car sit w/ the Koni Kit (shocks + springs)? I actually like the car at its current height, esp during that one or two snowstorms I drive through, where an inch or two makes a big difference on the highway, and from getting hung up on a snowpile under your car. So I'm wondering if the shocks alone would be fine. Do springs even go bad? Would convertible springs (stiffer?) be an option?
Thanks,
N
