It sounds you've been reading too many horror stories! Barely any of these cars, 900s or 9-3s, have timing chain issues. They're far more reliable than the timing belts that Hondas uses, and how often do you hear of those failing? Both types will eventually have their DI Cassette fail, but the 9-3's version will cost you a little less to replace. The chances of a turbo failure are also slim to none. Sometimes they might smoke a tiny bit past 100,000 miles, but even that isn't exactly common. You are right about the transmissions, though. The automatic is more reliable than the manual. Third gear is a little weak and tends to grind if you abuse it, and pre-'98 900s had a lousy clutch cable. Still, I'd take the manual over the automatic if it has the hydraulic mechanism. Personally I'd take a 9-3 over a 900. They had enough little changes that they're a better car, in my opinion, but a '97 or '98 900 would be a great car, too.
