In case you haven't fixed it already (or replaced switch....ouch!!). Yes, the switch doesn't like liquids. Try squirting some lock-ease graphite based solution into keyhole and around outer ring. Turn key and wiggle...wiggle again and again. Then wiggle more. There is a spring inside which likely bound up from drying up goo (sugar, etc.). I fixed mine, but it took a lot of patience and wiggling. Good luck.
