did something die in my heater?

Hi,
I do have another issue with the saab (i still haven't fixed the light situation), and it happened yesterday and today after being in the car with the heater on for at least 10 minutes it started to have a really old, musty odor, like the way an old house smells.
I have been reading old posts and folks are saying that I should replace the cabin air filter. I don't mind doing that, but I am not sure that is the problem...as I had the heater on full-blast about an hour on saturday (after capsizing a small sailboat in the frigid Pacific) and there was no smell at all...just sunday and this morning i got the smell.
did an animal died in my car or something!? :o) I am in Vancouver, BC and it's been raining a lot more this weekend, than usual if you can imagine that!
I popped the hood this morning when i got to work and the smell is def emanating from there...it does not have an oil or electrical burning odor to it.
