In a fit of insanity I bought 3 NG900 convertibles in one weekend. A 1995 SE, a 1995 S and a 1996 SE. Two have tops working perfectly right now though one of those needs an engine swap. The third runs but has top problems. I managed to get it opened and down. Repaired the 5th bow latches & motor at that time. From what I have seen so far I decided to find a way to bypass the control unit if necessary. I have designed and built a manual control unit. It will allow me to operate each of the four motorized units individually. For example, I plan to connect to the 5th bow latch system and unlock the latches using the motor. Next switch to the 5th bow motors and raise the 5th bow. Then switch to the cover motor and open it. Back to the 5th bow motors to lower it. Next to the middle top motors and/or 5th bow motors and lower the top. (I don't know yet if all four motors are engaged simultaneously or sequentially in pairs.) Back to the main motor to close close the cover. I don't know yet if the cover is locked in place by the main motor or the 5th bow motors. I am not sure this is the correct sequence. This is all still theory as I will not test my device until next week when I am working on my daughter's car. Anyone know why this should not work? It completely bypasses the control unit. Since I am running power directly to the motors the control unit cannot prevent them from functioning.
Next question, since I should never have to release the main motor to raise the top manually can I just take a large hose type clamp (approx. 6" diameter) and clamp the main motor assembly on the right side of the trunk in the "closed" position and forget about it flexing or separating? The clamp can always be removed to release the top for a dead battery scenario.
I may just be too ignorant to see where my mistakes are. But this seems like it should work perfectly. The only caveats I see are: 1. The motors must be functioning. 2. The gears must be intact.
Comments and suggestions will be appreciated.
